Llangollen and Return Dragonfly Narrowboat Hire
34 locks, 80 miles, 6.5 hours per day – 7 nights.
the route used by the historic Fly boats.
The Llangollen Canal is one of the most beautiful canals on the whole system; the gentle countryside of Cheshire and Shropshire is in sharp contrast to the dramatic scenery of Wales. There are two major aqueducts, the Chirk Aqueduct and of course the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct crossing 127 feet above the River Dee and described by its engineer (Thomas Telford) as the “river in the sky”.
Between the two aqueducts is the Chirk Tunnel and at the far end are Chirk Castle and the town of Chirk, both within walking distance.
Llangollen is a beautiful Welsh town, set
alongside the rushing waters of the River Dee it has many good places to eat, interesting shops, a ruined castle, horse drawn narrow boat and a steam railway (www.llangollen-railway.co.uk).
New visitor moorings are now available in a basin at the end of the canal, charges are £5.00 per night, arrive by 4.30pm.
Why not make it a 10-day holiday and explore more of the picturesque towns and villages en-route e.g. Wrenbury (www.wrenbury.info), Whitchurch and Ellesmere; also go along the first few restored miles of the enchanting Montgomery Canal.
